Post-anesthesia fish video. The first two are fully conscious; the third fish became fully conscious after the video.
Science is awesome.

Some of you pre-med, pre-vet, pre-pharm, pre-optometry, and other general pre-health students who follow me have been expressing frustration with college, stress, grades, and the constant guillotine of professional school admission swinging over your head.
I know it’s hard. I know it’s stressful. Use that stress to move forward; use your fears of not getting in toward kicking ass in lectures and labs. If, at any point, you start to feel like you’re circling the drain, like you can’t take anymore, do your university, your friends, your family, and yourself a favor: slow down, reassess, and maybe even take a break.
Strive to keep in mind the beauty of what we’re learning: every day, we have the potential to learn the secrets of the universe. We can learn how organic compounds work on the smallest scale. We study their interactions with one another, giving birth to the vast complexity of life. We see the footprints this complexity leaves on its environment — from the depths of the sea to the heights of the atmosphere. Beyond that, we learn the fundamentals of the nature of things: electricity, gravity, magnetism. These are not solely means to an end… not just a way to understand how radiation therapy may work, how a drug may interact with intracellular proteins, or how our bodies move. These things are perhaps the things most joyous to know in life: knowing what a small portion of the world’s population knows, and using it not only to be better educated, but eventually make a positive impact in the lives of others.
While I’m not a doctor yet, I can tell you that no amount of depression or self-torture is worth what will one day change from being your sole focus in life to being your job. Don’t lose your health over this. At the end of the day, remember:
“Medice, cura te ipsum.”
“Doctor, take care of yourself.”
Go be extraordinary.
