The Jumping Frenchmen of Maine disorder is a psycho-neurological disorder; its sufferers are easily startled and exhibit an uncontrollable “jump” whenever they are frightened or startled. The jumps are caused by neurons uncontrollably firing all the way down the body, beginning in the neck and shoulders, then traveling down through the legs.
Dr. George Miller Beard, a New England physician, observed and named the disease while studying an endemic in Maine.
